Digital Spirometry

Who is the Digital Spirometry service for?

The Digital Spirometry Service is for people with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and other respiratory conditions. The service supports patients undergoing assessment and monitoring of their lung function.

How will it work?

When a patient joins the Digital Spirometry Pathway, they receive a Bluetooth-enabled spirometer. Along with the device, the patient will receive training on how to use it. This training includes a leaflet about the Spirobank app. It also provides help to navigate any issues that may arise.

Patients must download the Spirobank app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. They should then complete the registration and set-up process. Once complete, the patient can take their first spirometry readings using the device. Patients should allow for up to three attempts to ensure accurate results. The Spirobank app provides coaching to guide patients through the process.

The Digital Spirometry Pathway continuously monitors the submitted results. Clinical staff receive an alert if a patient’s Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) baseline reading shows a significant change (usually 10% or more). Patients must submit weekly readings to ensure regular monitoring of their lung function.

Clinicians will receive an alert if a patient fails to submit their readings. This prompts them to check on the patient’s engagement with the service. Care facilities receive alerts if a patient’s readings show a significant decline in FVC. This allows for timely intervention by the clinical team.

Patients stay in the service until their monitoring period is complete and they are no longer required to provide readings. The service then generates a final report when the patient is discharged. This report summarises their readings and any clinical outcomes and is available for the patient’s records.

Objectives and outcomes

This approach ensures that patients receive continuous support and effective management of their respiratory health throughout their engagement with the service.
